The Housing Authority of Grenada has its origin in 1959, when through the passing of the Housing Loans Ordinance, the Government Housing Loan Board was formed. In 1974, after achieving independence, the Housing Authority of Grenada Act established the Housing Authority of Grenada. In 1981 under the People's Revolutionary Government, People's Law no.38 of 1981 established the National Housing Authority of Grenada with exclusive rights to the Authority to plan, develop and finance housing and land for residential and community purposes.

In 1995, under the new laws of Grenada, the National Housing Authority of Grenada was once again renamed the Housing Authority of Grenada and was made a Statutory Organization under the Ministry of Housing.

The Authority's present mission and vision statements epitomize the organisation as a primary low and middle-income house provider for Grenadians.

MISSION STATEMENT

Improving the quality of life of low and middle income Grenadians through the provision of comfortable, adequate, durable but affordable housing.

VISION STATEMENT

Striving to become the primary housing provider for low and middle income Grenadians by providing houses of highest quality, but reasonable price, that meets the needs of the clientele.

With this mission and vision so clearly in focus, the Authority has sought to develop and upgrade the housing facilities of the low and middle income groups of Grenadians.

As a result of the coming into being of formal housing institutions, housing programmes such as the River Road, Telescope, Grand Anse and Bonaire Housing Schemes were launched. Each sought to provide housing accommodation to low-income earners and urban working class individuals.

Mindful of the inability of the targeted market to accumulate funds to purchase houses, the Authority moved on to the extension of Mortgage Loan and Material Loan Packages to clients..

The mortgage program afforded individuals who had their own lands and a small but steady source of income to own a house through the Authority.

In many cases individual monthly payment was a mere $250.00.

To satisfy other needs, the Authority extended a Material Loan Package Programme to individuals wishing to improve their quality of housing accommodation, either through extension of or repairs to existing facilities.

Material Loans were granted to a maximum of E.C $20,000.00 to be repaid over a five year period at 9% interest per annum.

The Housing Authority of Grenada over the years has been severely plagued with the problem of delinquent clients and hence created a climate whereby all credit facilities were placed on hold.

The Authority is conscious of its mission and vision statements and has embarked on measures to correct delinquency. Thus, with it's new levels of operation the Authority will be reintroducing Mortgage and Material Loan Package Programmes.

The future for all low & middle-income earners seeking the opportunity to own a house looks bright.

In November 2000 the Authority completed the construction of 15 houses at Diamond Estate in St.Mark and is currently organizing to build Cuban designed hurricane resistant houses in Carriacou, St.John, St.Mark, St. Patrick, St. David, St. Andrew and Frequente in St. George.
Additionally, the Authority has combined forces with the Government of Grenada to develop a housing programme for persons desirous of residing rural areas at St.Andrew, where one hundred families would be housed and lots of land would be available for persons desirous of doing their own construction.

The housing Authority of Grenada through perseverance and public cooperation will become the primary provider of low and middle income houses for all Citizens of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
